What B1 means, in plain English
B1 is intermediate on the CEFR ladder. A B1 speaker can manage the everyday English a workplace runs on: conversations, instructions and short messages.
Talk about yourself, your work and your plans in connected sentences, on familiar topics, without a script.
Ask for information, explain a problem, arrange a time, follow instructions given at normal speed.
Say what happened, what you are doing now and what you intend to do, and give simple reasons for it.
Produce a short, understandable written message covering the facts that matter.
Who a B1 certificate is for
Employers use a B1 result to check a new starter can understand instructions, raise problems and work safely alongside colleagues in English.
Screen candidates once, independently, and attach the certificate to the profile you put forward. Every certificate verifies free.
A dated, verifiable B1 certificate on a job application says more than a self-declared line about language skills ever can.
The same assessment can be taken at a B1 or B2 target level. If the role or course you are aiming at names B2, take the B2 English test instead; if it asks for solid workplace English, B1 is the certificate to hold.
