What B2 means, in plain English

B2 is upper intermediate on the CEFR, the international ladder for language ability. A B2 speaker can work in English, not just get by in it.

Converse freely and in detail

Hold a natural conversation on everyday topics without hunting for words, and keep up when the other person speaks at normal speed.

Explain and justify

Give a view and back it up: why you did something, what you would do in a situation, what should happen next.

Handle the unexpected

Deal with a change of plan, a complaint or a question you did not see coming, in English, without the conversation breaking down.

Write clearly

Produce a clear, connected written message that says what happened, what is needed and by when.

Who asks for B2

Security training providers

B2 is the benchmark used for UK licence-linked security training. Training providers agree their English assessment method with their awarding organisation, and Attest English gives them an independent, evidence-backed way to record it.

Employers

Customer-facing and safety-critical roles turn on communication. A B2 certificate tells an employer the candidate can converse, take instructions and de-escalate in English.

You

A dated, verifiable B2 certificate is evidence you control: attach it to applications, hand it to a recruiter, or bring it to your course provider.

How the test proves it

A certificate is only as strong as the evidence behind it, so every Attest English result is designed for employers and training providers to rely on.

Assessed, not self-declared

Fifteen minutes of real performance across speaking, listening, reading and writing, recorded and transcribed. Not a multiple-choice quiz.

Scored against CEFR descriptors

An AI examiner scores each task against published CEFR descriptors and must quote your own words as evidence. Fixed, published arithmetic turns task scores into a result.

Human moderated

Borderline and flagged results are decided by a human assessor, and any candidate can request a human review. No one fails by machine alone.

Identity-bound

Photo ID checks, a photograph taken at assessment that appears on the certificate, and continuous recording. The certificate shows the person who sat the test.
